Suvarnabhumi Airport: Killing 90 Minutes Before Check-in

Guides 2026.09.21 2 min read NoWa

If you land at Suvarnabhumi hours before a night flight, check-in and lounge access are both still hours away, and you may not have a single baht in cash.

We hit this gap ourselves: ninety minutes with nothing booked in, no lounge yet, and a family to keep occupied. Here’s what worked, and what to plan for if you land early too.

Why check-in opens later than you’d think

We reached Suvarnabhumi at 14:30 for a night flight. Check-in didn’t open until 16:00. That’s a flat ninety minutes with no counter to queue at and no lounge access, because lounge entry needs a boarding pass, and you don’t get one until you’ve checked in.

If your flight leaves late, don’t assume you can drift straight from arrival into a lounge. Build in time for the wait before check-in itself, not just the wait before boarding.

INFO ・ The gap, in numbers

  • Arrival at airport: 14:30
  • Check-in counter opened: 16:00
  • Wait before check-in: 90 minutes
  • Lounge access: not possible until after check-in

Where to spend cash-free time

We used Starbucks. It takes cards, has seating, and nobody rushes you out. My wife opened her laptop and cleared work email while we waited, which made the ninety minutes feel less wasted.

If you want something more substantial than coffee, the terminal has chain options like The Pizza Company for a sit-down meal, and Bill Bentley Pub, which other travellers use for exactly this kind of pre-lounge wait. All of these take cards, so you don’t need Thai baht in hand if you’re only passing through.

What the kids do for ninety minutes

There’s no play area built for this exact gap. With young kids, the honest plan is to pick one seated spot, order drinks, and let the wait pass rather than trying to tour the terminal. We didn’t chase down anything special. Cafe seating, a window, and something to drink were enough to get through it without anyone melting down.

How much margin to build into a night flight

Ninety minutes disappeared before check-in even opened. If your flight is at night, don’t count on killing time in the lounge from the moment you arrive. Check when your airline’s counter opens, treat that gap as its own block of time, and keep a card-friendly cafe in mind as the fallback.

This isn’t a stop worth planning a detour for. It’s a gap you’ll hit anyway if you fly at night, and the fix is simple: know that check-in has its own opening time separate from lounge access, keep a card on you, and pick a seat at a place like Starbucks rather than wandering the terminal with kids in tow. If your check-in window already lines up with your arrival, skip all of this and go straight through.
