Before you park, decide whether you are willing to walk about 3km — because the free shuttle will not save you from it.
We arrived thinking the free shuttle bus would carry us most of the way from wherever we slept. It does not work like that. This is what we found once we were there, and what it means for anyone camping nearby.
Where does the free shuttle actually start?
The shuttle only runs between the main car park and the entrance to Mont Saint-Michel. It goes back and forth along that one stretch. It does not go out to the campsites, the town of Pontorson, or anywhere else people actually sleep. If you are staying somewhere outside that car park, the shuttle is not part of your journey until you have already reached it on foot or by car.

Does it stop at campsites? The walk you cannot avoid
We stayed near enough to Mont Saint-Michel that the campsite felt close on the map. It was not close to the shuttle stop. To reach the car park where the bus actually starts, we would have had to walk roughly 3km first. At that point the shuttle saves you almost nothing. You are walking either way — the only question is whether you walk to the bus, or walk the whole way to the entrance.
So think about this before choosing a campsite for the night: distance from the campsite to the main car park matters more than distance to Mont Saint-Michel itself, because that car park is where the free ride begins.
Is the walk in worth it, or should you wait for a car park spot?
We chose to walk. There is a route through the sheep pastures, with thin channels of water running out toward the grass. That was the reason. Our navigation app said one hour on foot. By car, the same distance is 40 minutes. The kids managed the walk without complaint, mostly because there was water and sheep to look at rather than an empty road.
Either way, we were walking.
If you are short on time, or traveling with a child who cannot manage an hour of uneven ground, driving to the car park and taking the shuttle from there is the faster option. If you have the hour and want to see the pastures up close, the walk is the better use of it.
What happens once you are on the shuttle?
Once you reach the main car park, the shuttle covers the last stretch efficiently. Other visitors have reported that within that stretch it makes a few stops — at the car park, near the shops, at the dam, and at the island itself — so you are not necessarily dropped at one single point. But the part that matters for planning is the same: none of those stops are back at a campsite. The free ride starts and ends within sight of Mont Saint-Michel, not from where you slept.
Who should walk, who should drive, who should skip it
If you are camping nearby and do not mind an hour on foot through open pasture, walk it — the sheep and the water channels make the approach worth doing once. If you are traveling with young kids who tire fast, or you are short on daylight, drive to the main car park and pick up the shuttle there instead of trying to reach the shuttle stop on foot from your campsite. Either way, do not plan around the shuttle picking you up from bed. It never leaves the car park.
